Information and consent for genomic research
11.11.2025
Genomic research using whole genome sequencing (WGS) is developing rapidly. Genetic data is already being collected and evaluated in a large number of research projects. General consent applies to the reuse of genetic data in coded form. However, when whole genome sequencing is carried out as part of research projects, this represents a different dimension in genetics. The determination of individual genes (“genetic” research) is different from WGS (“genomic” research). For the latter type of reuse, swissethics is providing for the first time a template for information and consent (link). This template is optional and can be used for new projects. It can be used either in addition to the general consent or in addition to the project specific information and consent – whenever WGS is planned as an additional (optional) further use. Important: this document only applies to germline testing (e.g. from blood) and does not apply to somatic testing of tumour tissue.
