Publication in Jusletter: Human research, further use and informed consent

02.02.2021

swissethics was mandated by the FOPH, Human Research Section, in 2020 to prepare a structured analysis on the further use of health-related personal data and biological material and the application of Article 34 HRA (link to the report in German). In the HRA, the further use of health-related data and biological material is possible without the consent of the participants if cumulatively three requirements according to Article 34 lit. a-c are fulfilled. The study now published in Jusletter in German (link) analyses the characteristics of such applications from researchers and how the research ethics committees evaluate them. The study provides for the first time an in-depth insight into further use research in Switzerland since the introduction of the HRA. The balancing act of promoting human research and protecting the participants in research remains challenging and complex.
